Sustainability Policy

The Atlantic Hotel is committed to achieving best practice environmental, energy and social sustainability and has partnered with EarthCheck, the world’s leading Benchmarking and Certification provider.

SCOPE

The Atlantic Hotel is a 4 AA Red Star 50-room hotel set in ten acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and grounds on the dramatic west coast of Jersey. The hotel comprises of golf and ocean view bedrooms, garden studios and suites, conference facilities, a small health club incorporating an indoor swimming pool, spa pool, mini gym and saunas, a cocktail bar and the 4 AA Rosette Ocean Restaurant serving modern British cuisine. The gardens include an al fresco dining terrace and outdoor pool.

The Atlantic Hotel enjoys breath-taking views over the golden sands of St Ouen’s Bay and the crystal blue Atlantic Ocean. The hotel borders the 2145-hectare Jersey National Park, which covers 16% of the island, with the aim of protecting, conserving, and enhancing natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage within its boundaries. Close to the hotel, the national park encompasses a site of special interest, important for the diversity of wildlife. In the landscape surrounding the hotel there is also a site of archaeological importance.

At The Atlantic Hotel, we recognise that our business activities have the potential for negative impacts on the environment and community if not properly managed. As such we have implemented an Environmental Management System that meets the requirements of the EarthCheck Company Standard. The Atlantic Hotel is committed to continual improvement,
measured by way of annual Benchmarking Assessments. The team at The Atlantic Hotel strives towards minimising our impact on the environment by implementing sustainable initiatives aimed at improving the hotel’s performance, reducing the use of Energy and Water and the production of Waste.

1.1 REPRESENTATION

This section outlines The Atlantic Hotel’s journey towards sustainability and energy efficiency.

1.1.1 RESPONSIBILITIES

The Atlantic Hotel has appointed Sheena Brockie as the EarthCheck Coordinator, who has responsibility to lead and develop the Hotel’s performance in terms of sustainability. Sheena is supported by the wider sustainability team.

1.1.2 STAFF AWARENESS AND TRAINING

The Atlantic Hotel has promoted awareness of environmental and energy management to all employees, to ensure they are aware of the sustainability and energy requirements associated with their role. We have identified competencies and training needs for different roles. We have a staff induction process which includes our Policy, Risk Assessment and overall long-term sustainability and energy efficiency approach. It also includes specific environmental and energy management aspects for the duties and responsibilities of each position. There is a rolling programme of training aimed at keeping staff updated with their environmental and energy management responsibilities.

The Atlantic Hotel management team is knowledgeable, understands and supports the long-term sustainability and energy efficient approach and ensures that resources are available to achieve the intended outcomes.

The Atlantic Hotel is committed to protecting the environment. This includes water quality, energy efficiency, recycling, waste management, air quality, climate change mitigation and biodiversity monitoring.

1.2.2 CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT

The Atlantic Hotel is committed to a rolling programme of continual improvement in sustainability and energy efficiency and is committed to carrying out annual benchmarking through the EarthCheck programme.

1.2.3 LEGAL COMPLIANCE

The Atlantic Hotel will comply with all relevant legislation and regulations and aims to achieve international best practice.

1.2.4 LOCAL EMPLOYMENT

The Atlantic Hotel is committed to employing local staff where possible. We are a Living Wage employer.

1.2.5 PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

The Atlantic Hotel has a Sustainable Procurement Policy in place which covers purchasing of food, goods, energy efficient equipment as well other consumables and services.
We are committed to fair trade principles. We are committed to give preference to local products and services, including Genuine Jersey products.
