Victoria College students raise money for Autism Jersey with The Atlantic Hotel
06 August 2013
This month, The Atlantic Hotel and Victoria College proudly presented a cheque for £2,540 to Autism Jersey. The money was raised following six months of activity which culminated with the students taking over the kitchens of Ocean Restaurant at The Atlantic, under the expert guidance of Executive Head Chef Mark Jordan, to prepare and cook a charity luncheon for 50 people on March 23rd 2013.
This great partnership came about after Will Gorman, an English teacher with a keen interest in food, contacted Patrick Burke, owner of The Atlantic Hotel to suggest they work together on a project to raise money for one of the school’s chosen charities.
Commenting on the fundraising initiative Mr Gorman said, “Working with Autism Jersey and The Atlantic Hotel has provided a pretty unique experience for our students. The boys have been very lucky to work with some of the Island’s leading professionals, not only through Mark Jordan’s fantastic team in his kitchen, but also through their wide network of producers and suppliers who have all been very keen to share what they do. What started as a teacher’s desire to share his interest in cooking has become something much more complex, and a very special relationship that will hopefully allow us to continue to raise money and awareness for a very important charity in Jersey.”
This is the second year running that The Atlantic Hotel has opened its doors to a team of nine Year 12 students from Victoria College. The aim of the project was to allow the boys, aged sixteen and seventeen, to gain experience working in a professional kitchen at the very highest level; to learn more about the hospitality industry and to educate them on many different aspects of the business, including visits to some of the hotel’s suppliers, through to event planning and wine tasting.
Commenting on the partnership Patrick Burke said, “We work hard to promote and nurture talent in the hospitality industry and this initiative allows us to introduce the students to a number of different facets of our business and to demonstrate the extremely exacting standards required when working in a professional environment where attention to detail is key. It also enables us to support a very worthy local cause in Autism Jersey.”
The partnership between The Atlantic Hotel, Victoria College and Autism Jersey commenced in 2011 and since then some £5,030 has been raised in support of the charity.
Chairman of Autism Jersey, Nick Winsor commented: "I am really impressed by the hard work of Mark Jordan and the students from Victoria College in raising this money. The lunch was fantastic, and showed the many hours of preparation and training that went into making this event such a success. Not only have the students made a valuable contribution to Autism Jersey, they have also learned new skills from a great chef. We are very grateful for the support we receive each year from The Atlantic Hotel’s owner Patrick Burke and Mark Jordan, along with that of Will Gorman and the team at Victoria College.”
