St Helier

A bustling town popular with both islanders and visitors, St Helier boasts two department stores, Voisins and de Gruchy’s, both of which were founded over 100 years ago by local families and now offer a wide choice of clothing and homeware. King Street is also home to many familiar high street names, while Halkett Place, Halkett Street and Beresford Street have a wide range of smaller specialist shops and designer boutiques.

The Central Market

Jersey’s public markets were first established in the late 1500s and thus feature very prominently in the history of the medieval town of St Helier. Today sheltering beneath a beautiful domed roof, the Central Market is home to a variety of specialist traders, including butchers, bakers, greengrocers, florists and delicatessens, as well as cafés and boutiques.

Beresford Fish Market

Originally constructed in 1841, Beresford Market is a feast for the senses, with a tantalising array of fresh local fish and imported varieties. Visitors can marvel at seafood such as lobsters, crabs, octopus and squid, as well as locally farmed oysters and mussels and shiny striped mackerel.

The world of gold and gemstones comes to life in the heart of Lion Park. Visitors can select their own diamond from the Diamondology department, commission a unique necklace and even design their own pieces in the Quick Silver jewellery school. Jersey Goldsmiths is also home to a large collection of gold and memorabilia, with many items belonging to international film and stage legends, while children can pan for gold and test their wits against the new Pirate Challenge.

Works from more than 80 local artists are on display at Jersey’s largest gallery, while regular workshops, lectures and demonstrations are designed to excite and educate adults and children alike. As well as viewing and purchasing unique artwork, visitors can also source unusual textiles, raw materials and craft books.

St Brelade

The parish of St Brelade boasts several specialised shopping locations. Within a five minute drive from The Atlantic Hotel are two small shopping precincts with a range of shops including ladies’ fashion retailers, chemists, perfumery and cosmetics, a health shop, surf shops as well as both a barber and a hairdresser. A few banks also have small local branches and there is a sub post office located in the Co-Op supermarket.

Also in the same locality is the Jersey Lavender Farm (www.jerseylavender.co.uk) a working farm dedicated to the growing, harvesting, distillation and drying of lavender. A wide range of fragrant lavender toiletries can be found in the gift shop and a tearoom offers delicious lunches and home made teas. Open May – September.
